Me and My Shop
Co-owner of Keelham Hall Farm Shop, James has worked in the meat business since leaving school and is a true champion on behalf of his chosen trade.
"I like nothing better than attending our local auction marts to meet and talk to farmers face to face and personally bid for their prime beef and lamb. It's a bit like the Stock Exchange in London, only the agricultural version.
On a weekly basis, we buy the best meat the region has to offer many show champions and prizewinners among them and, unlike some others in the industry, we buy and make use of the whole animal.
"The local supply ethos is key to our entire philosophy. We support over 150 Yorkshire producers and suppliers, and remain ardent in our belief that quality local food should be affordable for all. It's a recipe that is really appreciated by our customers. How do we know? Because they often tell us we cannot be beaten on both taste and price."
James, who is also in big demand as a judge at local prime stock shows, says the business has an across-the-board commitment to training, seen as vital to its continuing success and development. "There are no fewer than seven master butchers at Keelham Hall Farm Shop, boasting over 200 years' worth of experience between them. We also employ several apprentice butchers, who undertake specialist training to equip them with the skills to become our master butchers of the future.
"Our efforts have been reflected in year-on-year growth. We have a real passion for everything we serve and now regularly attract over 8,000 customers a week.
"Last year, we were extremely proud to be chosen as one of three finalists in the Farm Shop Butchery of the Year category in MTJ's Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards. We intend to do better!"
