Queen does the honours

Food and farming leaders have been awarded New Year's honours by the Queen in recognition of their work in the agricultural sector.

Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) president Gareth Vaughan was awarded the MBE for his services to agriculture. Vaughan runs a traditional beef and sheep unit at Cwmyrhiewdre Farm, Dolfor, near Newtown, and was re-elected FUW president last year. Meanwhile, an OBE went to chairman of the Agri-Skills Strategy Group Richard Longthorp, a Bpex board member who is based in Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire, for services to the farming industry. An OBE also went to Colin Smith of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, for services to the Assured Food Standards (AFS). Smith stood down as AFS chairman in 2009 after serving the full fixed six-year term of office. Food Standards Agency veterinary manager Lewis Grant, of Bedale, North Yorkshire, was another recipient of an OBE.
