Pork product of the year entries shortlisted
Butchers, bakers and pork product makers will be waiting to see who will be taking the top title in the Bpex Pork Product of the Year Competition 2011.
A total of 18 products have been shortlisted following several days of judging, with three competing for a title in each category.
These products will now be showcased at a special presentation ceremony and awards lunch at Butchers’ Hall on Thursday 24 March, where one will be crowned Overall Champion and Foodservice Pork Product of the Year 2011.
Now in its fifth year, the competition, which is sponsored by Meat Trades Journal, rewards product excellence and aims to ensure quality pork dishes continue to secure a place on today’s menus.
Organiser Bpex said this year’s competition attracted record numbers of entries, with over 130 products submitted by chefs, butchers and manufacturers to the foodservice industry.
Bpex foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger said: “We were overwhelmed by the originality and excellence of entries this year. Nearly every category saw an increase, clearly demonstrating the growing market for quality pork products.
“We are delighted that so many companies use the competition as a way to prepare products ready for market and use the awards they achieve as a valuable marketing tool. It is a fantastic way of showing customers your commitment to providing them with the pork products of the highest possible standard. We look forward to seeing this year’s products make their way on to menus and food counters.”
The first, second and third-placed products in each category are as follows:
Category 1: Fresh Pork Cut

Category 3: Best Cold Eating Product
Winner: Hot and Spicy Rustic Pulled Pork, Bearfields
Second Place: Best English Brawn, Uptons of Bassett
Third Place: Grannie Pettit’s Rustic Terrine, John Pettit & Sons
Category 4: Pork and Pastry
Winner: Pork and Red Onion Sausage Roll, Muff’s of Bromborough
Second Place: Pork Pie with Stilton Crumb Topping, Owen Taylor & Sons
