Industry mourns Noakes
Douglas Noakes, a former Superintendent of Smithfield Market and Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers, has died after a long illness.
Noakes was Clerk and Superintendent of Smithfield from 1967 until 1991 and was a founding member of the World Union of Wholesale Markets.
He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers in 2001/2. After his Mastership he became President of the BDCI for a period before his illness. He had a close association with the charity, chairing its general purposes committee for some 20 years and was a fund-raising chairman of the charity’s predecessor organisation.
He was appointed MBE for services to the meat industry and his charitable work. His wife Margaret predeceased him. He leaves two children. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
