Although there have been no confirmed outbreaks of the disease, the supermarkets have recalled the ground beef as a precaution.
Officials have confirmed that the meat, which the supermarkets say comes from the National Beef Packing Co. in Kansas, was primarily sold to supermarkets in the southern states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Tennessee. However it was also sent to several distributors and may have been packaged for sale throughout the USA.
E.coli O157 is a serious bacterial infection that causes abdominal pain and diarrhoea. It is caused by eating contaminated food, or through contact with farm animals or contaminated water. Although most people recover without complications, the most severe cases can develop kidney failure.
