Nigel Hofmann is Champion of Champions
A Wakefield butcher has beaten the UK’s best sausage-makers to take the top title at MTJ’s Champion of Champions competition.
Nigel Hofmann’s traditional pork sausage beat entries from 22 other butchers in the competition, which sees award-winning champion sausages from across the country battle it out for the title of Best Sausage in the UK.
Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: “Champion of Champions is always a hotly contested title, and this year’s judges were taking no prisoners. However, the winner this year stood out head and shoulders above the rest, and his sausage proves that when it’s done as well as that, it’s hard to beat a simple traditional pork sausage.”
Commenting on his win, Nigel, who runs Hofmann’s in Wakefield, Yorkshire, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic — we’ve been in the Champion of Champions final for… well this is the fourth time we’ve been in it. It has been hard work, but it’s the ultimate accolade — it’s like winning the world cup!”
He added that his traditional pork sausage is the shop’s best-seller. “We make a lot of speciality sausages, but at the end of the day the pork sausage just takes some beating — it’s absolutely fantastic... We only use the finest ingredients — and it pays off, obviously.”
This year’s Champion of Champions competition took place for the first time at MTJ’s Butchers’ Fair in Bolton Arena on 2 October. The competition was sponsored by Bpex, Harder Bros and Lucas Ingredients.
