Co-op builds new £22m distribution depot

The Co-operative Group has started work on a new 477,000sq ft food distribution centre in north Derbyshire, which will distribute approximately 40,000 cases of meat and meat products a week and service 529 stores in the Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire areas.

The £22m plant in Castlewood, South Normanton, will take over distribution from two other food depots, Alfreton near Derby, and in Bulwell in Nottingham. It is expected that the 740-strong workforce from the existing plants will transfer from to Castlewood, although an extra 340 new jobs are also expected to be created.

The site will be fully operational by 2013.

Mark Leonard, The Co-op's head of logistics service, said: “The new distribution depot will provide a major boost to the local economy and employment. It will not only create a significant number of new jobs locally, but its proximity to our existing depots in the area will allow many staff to transfer to the new site, safeguarding around 740 jobs in the region.

“The site is ideally located near to the motorway network and it will help us to continue to provide a first-class service to our growing store network.”

The facility will include state-of-the-art energy efficiencies and recycling initiatives.
