20-year-old butcher wins Bpex Roadshow
A 20-year-old butcher from Bolster Moor Farm Shop, Huddersfield, won the overall champion title at the Bpex North East and Yorkshire Roadshow with his ‘traditional thick pork sausage’.
Fourth-generation butcher Luke Haigh also won the Young Sausage-Maker title, and will now go on to compete in the Champion of Champions competition organised by Meat Trades Journal. He is also working to be part of the UK Team in the International Young Butcher Competition.
His father, and owner of the farm shop, Simon Haigh said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for Luke, who has worked very hard and is also responsible for our category winning ‘Pork, Sage and Onion Sausage’ speciality sausage and had a hand in making the ‘Home Made Lamb Curry’ ready meal with our other young butcher Craig Rollinson.”
Family-owned Bolster Moor Farm Shop also grabbed the Speciality Pork Sausage, Black Pudding and Ready Meal titles. Simon added: “Entering competitions really drives our business forward. It is a way of trialling new recipes before they go on sale, as well as demonstrating the level of quality and service customers can expect from us. After all, the products we put forward for evaluation are just as you’d find in the shop. We’re not in a busy town, so need to encourage people to come and find us – and having award-winning products is a great way of doing this.”
