Co-operative celebrates FreeFrom success

The Co-operative’s Food was celebrating after scooping a major award for its own-brand premium Minted Lamb Burgers among others.

The retailer took four honours in this year’s FreeFrom Food Awards, picking up the best ‘meat-based meal centres’ accolade for its Truly Irresistible Minted Lamb Burgers, while three other products from the retailer’s new own-brand gluten and wheat-free foods were also highly commended or commended.

According to the retailer, judges commented that the premium burgers were, “a lamb & mint combo classic – succulent but not overpowering mint – an excellent lamb product”. In the same category, The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Pork Sausages were commended for their, “aroma, texture and flavour.”

Kate Jones, head of farms and food development for The Co-operative Food, said: “We introduced the Free From range last year in response to an increased demand from our customers for gluten and wheat-free products, as more people choose these foods out of personal preference, as well as for health reasons.  The range has been very popular with our customers and to have so many of our products recognised is a fantastic achievement.”

Now in their fifth year, the FreeFrom Food Awards, run by Food Matters, celebrate the innovation and imagination shown by the food industry in creating foods that do not include gluten, wheat or dairy – with many shortlisted products also being free from eggs, nuts, and other major allergens.
