Tim Smith moves to Tesco

The ex chief executive of the FSA Tim Smith will take up a new role with Tesco next month.

A Tesco spokeswoman told MeatInfo.co.uk that Tim Smith had been appointed as group technical director of Tesco.

Group commercial director at Tesco Kevin Grace said: "I'm delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Smith as our group technical director, reporting to me."

"He'll bring deep knowledge and breadth of experience which will help us realise our wider ambitions for the business in this area. His early priorities will include our work on quality and freshness, further strengthening an ethical and secure supply base across the group as well as supporting his excellent team in their efforts so our customers continue to benefit from our world leading operating standards."

Smith said: “After a long career as both a branded and own-label food manufacturer, much of which involved supplying Tesco, it was a challenge to switch priorities to lead the UK’s regulator of the food industry. However, the principle of doing the right thing for consumers was exactly the same.

"Now I’m delighted to be able to apply those same values to what is, in my opinion, the world’s leading retailer. I have long admired the qualities of the Tesco people and their business and look forward to doing what I can to help in the next phase of Tesco’s development.”
