Co-op revamps ready meals range
The Co-operative has revamped its own-brand ready meals, introducing seven new dishes and revising the recipes of of its nine existing meals, as well as introducing an own-brand Chinese takeaway range.
The new dishes include a Spanish-inspired meatball dish for two people, which is under the Truly Irresistible label and uses British Freedom Food pork, in addition to six traditional British dishes. These include an 800g chicken hot pot, and 400g servings of Cumberland pie with minced beef, lamb hot pot, chicken stew and dumplings and a corned beef hash.
The Co-op has also refreshed eight other recipes in the range, including its cottage pie, beef stew and dumplings, sausage and mash, minced beef hot pot, braised steak and mash and chilli con carne.
The takeaway range, which will be available nationwide, includes starters and main meals and aims to offer good value-for-money and no cook solutions. Appetisers include an an aromatic half crispy duck and pancakes with Hoi Sin sauce, chicken spring rolls, and satay sticks, with main courses of British beef in black bean sauce, Kung Po chicken, battered chicken with sweet chilli sauce and chicken chow mein.
Consumer insight from AHDB earlier this summer highlighted the fact that ready meals have performed well during the economic downturn, after weathering a slight dip at the start of the recession. Consumers have been offered good deals on ready meals and are consequently prepared to pay for the convenience.
