Cumberland sausage wins Bpex NW product awards
Ye Old Sausage Shop is celebrating after storming to success in the North West Bpex Pork Product Excellence Awards, which took place at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.
The Oswaldtwistle shop’s Cumberland sausage beat 200 products to win the overall title after first winning the Speciality Pork Sausage category, while staff member Jessica Leliuga was crowned Champion Young Sausage Maker in the North West for for the second year running.
Martin Teese and David Paintin, who run the shop, said they were delighted to finally win the overall title.
Paintin said: “This has been a brilliant result and certainly one of our best to date. We always do well, picking up gold awards and category champion titles, but have previously missed out on the overall title."
He added that the award “couldn't have come at a better time” for the business, which is about to open a third shop in Botany Bay, Chorley. “The awards will be a fantastic boost to all three outlets,” he said.
Martin thanked the staff in the shop, whom he said worked “amazingly together and put in 110%”.
“It is this team pride coupled with the use of quality local ingredients (we’ve been using the same pork supplier for many years) that ensures consistency in all that we do,” he said.
Jessica picked up three gold awards for sausages entered into the category for young butchers. She said: “The awards weren’t announced until the end, so I didn’t think we had achieved anything at first, but I was delighted when they called my name. When I spoke to the judges after, they said it was between two sausages – both of which were mine!”
Bpex butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher said the event was one of the best yet, with over 95% of products winning an award and over half walking away with a gold.
“The standard of entry continues to impress and goes to show that butchers and farm shops continue to deliver the very best-quality pork products,” he added.
Next up in the Bpex 2012/2013 Roadshow is the East Midlands, with product evaulation taking place at the Newark Showground, Nottinghamshire on Thursday 29 November. Entry forms and guidelines can be downloaded from http://porkforbutchers.bpex.org.uk.
