Great Taste Awards champion wins Italian award

A Northern Irish meat company, whose innovative Italian-inspired product scooped the top title at the Great Taste Awards in September, has won recognition in a prestigious Italian food award.

Produced by Hannan Meats, Moyallon guanciale is a cured pork product a little like pancetta, which is made from pig jowl. It was named as the best new ingredient at the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association Awards (PAPAS) 2012 - the first time that a Northern Irish company has won. The annual award, which was held in London, celebrates the innovation of the UK’s pizza, pasta and Italian food businesses.

Jilly Dougan, commercial director at Hannan Meats, said: “Winning this award for innovation in the PAPAS is a marvellous endorsement of the quality and flavour of our guanciale by the UK’s leading Italian food organisation.

“This recognition will be extremely beneficial as we seek to grow sales of this unique and highly acclaimed product to Italian restaurants and foodservice organisations in Britain and further afield.”

Hannan Meats now supplies its Moyallon guanciale to luxury London retailer Fortnum and Mason, and has received enquiries from a number of leading chefs in Italy.
