"Waste not want not" says Hensons
Butcher to some of the capital’s top hotels and restaurants, Hensons, is urging customers and competitors to “waste not want not” this Christmas.
The foodservice supplier has issued the plea as a supporter of the charity Crisis at Christmas, which looks after and feeds homeless people over the festive season. This year Crisis at Christmas will be opening 10 centres across London and expects to feed 3,000 homeless guests between 23 and 30 December.
Traditionally, Hensons donates products with a New Year “use-by” as Christmas approaches and, last year, donations of cheese and other dairy products from the company totalled £2,000, which would have otherwise gone to waste. This year, however, not only is Hensons planning to give away its unsold fresh produce, along with a pallet of tinned tomatoes, it has also joined forces with the wholesale butcher William, Warman and Guttridge (WWG) of Smithfield. WWG will donate a gift of 2,300 gourmet burgers to the cause.
Managing director at Hensons Andrew Brook explained the industry could and should do more to help charities like Crisis at Christmas. He said: “This year has been a tough one for many people. Our own hospitality industry hasn’t been immune to the recession, but at an individual level, most of us will still enjoy a good Christmas.”
Mark Warman of William, Warman and Guttridge added: “Before we break for Christmas, we will all have stock coming up to its use-by date during the holiday period and I would urge everyone not to bin but rather donate it. There is research suggesting that the UK’s restaurants already waste 600,000 tons of fit-to-eat food a year. Let’s not add to that when so many people are hungry.”
