Bpex on hunt for champion foodservice product

The hunt is on for the Bpex Foodservice Pork Product of the Year.

Catering butchers, manufacturers and chefs producing speciality pork cuts, dishes and products are all being urged to enter the competition.

The accolade of the best catering pork dish will be bestowed on the winner, which Bpex said will provide a great marketing tool and help to boost business throughout this year.

Bpex foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger explained that when it comes to meals eaten out of the home, pork meat holds the largest share of the market and accounts for more than 1.75m servings each year. He said: “Whether it’s a pie or a pâté, ribs or a traditional roasting cut – it is safe to say that pork is a firm favourite on menus.”

He added that the versatility, linked with the value, of pork were key to its popularity, which made pork an “ideal catering option — particularly in the current economic climate”.

“Customers expect quality and what better way to show it by not only using pork produced to rigorous standards as part of an assurance scheme, such as Red Tractor, but also being crowned Pork Product Champion,” Goodger said.

The closing date for the paper entries is Friday, 15 February 2013, after which samples will be required for formal judging by Wednesday 27 February 2013.

First, second and third place in the six categories will attend a special awards lunch at Butchers’ Hall in London on Friday, 12 April, where the 2013 champion will also be announced.

The competition has six categories, including:

•    Fresh Pork Cut
•    Pork Ready Meal
•    Best Cold Eating Product
•    Pork Bakery Product
•    Best Cured Product
•    Best Innovative Pork Product.
