Horsemeat: Sodexo pulls frozen beef products
Catering supplier Sodexo has announced that it has pulled all frozen beef products from its UK operations following the discovery of horse DNA.
The company, which supplies offices, schools, prisons and military bases across the UK, said that it had received “repeated guarantees” from suppliers that its products did not contain horsemeat, but that internal sampling had identified frozen beef products which tested positive for horse DNA.
“This situation is totally unacceptable. We felt the only appropriate response was to withdraw not only this product but all frozen beef products. We will only re-admit into our catering operations products that have affirmatively passed DNA testing, pursuant to laboratory test criteria,” said a statement from the company.
Sodexo said it had notified the Food Standards Agency and launched its own investigation into the contamination. It added that its Tillery Valley Foods business, which supplies the healthcare sector, was not affected.
