Peckham butcher takes Bpex’s South of England title
A Peckham-based butcher has won the South of England Bpex Butcher Roadshow, which took place in the middle of Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week.
The Overall Champion title was given to the butcher of Flock and Herd Butchers for his ‘Treacle Back Bacon’ creation, which was one of 206 products judged by industry experts at the South of England Showground in Ardingly on 20 March.
Charlie Shaw, the award-winner, opened his shop in September last year and said the business had taken off thanks to the firm’s passion for quality and innovative produce.
Shaw said: “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, but we are thrilled. We knew the bacon looked and tasted good, but never expected to come away as Champion, particularly on our first time out. We’ve only been making it for a couple of months, but it is a combination that just works. It has a great rich colour, smell and taste – perfect for breakfast – and always sells out.
