AHDB helps livestock producers on straw

29 April, 2013

The Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has launched a new web page to help livestock producers plan to secure their straw supply chain.

The page will help livestock producers seek information on sourcing straw and managing storage to effectively reduce waste.

Speaking about the new page, Bpex environment manager Nigel Penlington said: “The key points for all livestock producers are, firstly, to plan their straw or bedding sourcing early, secondly, to take a professional approach to secure a mutually beneficial deal and, thirdly, to ensure straw storage and usage is as efficient as possible.”

According to AHDB, the web page will also provide guidance on “muck for staw” agreements, which will help producers secure supplies and information on reducing losses. Penlington added: “If you are paying £70 per tonne, yet wasting a fifth due to moisture in the top and bottom bales of straw stacks, then you are actually paying £84 per tonne.”
