Brazilian UK exports bounce back
Brazilian beef exports to the UK increased 200% compared to last year, after a long period of decline.
Brazil accounted for 15% of exports to the UK in the mid-2000s and was the second largest exporter of beef to the UK, but sales have steadily declined. Despite a big increase in exports last year, less than 2% of total UK imports came from Brazil in January and February this year.
But Brazil is expecting another expansion in export volumes this year as production is increasing.
On a global scale, Brazil exported 251,000 tonnes of chilled and frozen beef in the first three months of this year, which showed an increase of over a third.
Brazil’s biggest export destination in 2012 was Russia, despite the significance of the Russian market having declined steadily since 2008. Hong Kong was its second largest market, followed by Venezuela, Chile and Egypt.
