A leading retailer has pledged increased support for the Welsh meat industry with the decision to only stock Welsh lamb in its Welsh stores.

Asda announced the move, which will see solely Welsh lamb stocked with the exception of Easter and Christmas promotions, and said it was part of its desire to extend its regional sourcing policies across the fresh meat sector.

Jim Viggars, Asda’s senior red meat trader, said: “Sourcing great-quality local products is central to Asda’s fresh food strategy and, wherever possible, we want to highlight the exceptional quality regional produce from British farmers. Welsh lamb is renowned the world over for its exceptional eating quality and we want to ensure as many of our customers as possible are able to enjoy it in its native country.

“Asda works closely with British farmers and growers to help them produce the very best produce for our customers and nowhere is this more true than in the sheep sector.”
