Tesco to offer Scottish chicken in Scotland
Tesco made a major move in support of Scottish agriculture yesterday by offering customers in Scotland 100% Scottish chicken.
The supermarket chain will offer Scottish-reared chicken in 194 stores in Scotland across its Everyday Value, Finest and Organic brands, which will be labelled with the Scottish flag. The birds will be supplied by 2 Sisters Food Group and Tesco expects to generate around 200,000 Scottish-reared chickens each week.
A Tesco statement said chicken would be reared to its “high welfare standards” and will come from more than 20 approved farms across Scotland. Birds reared indoors will be fed on balanced diets, in large, naturally lit sheds with bales and perches to encourage health and welfare.
Director of meat, fish and poultry at Tesco Derek Lawlor said: “We know our Scottish customers enjoy the wide variety of fantastic local produce Scotland has to offer, so we are delighted to announce that all our fresh chicken in our Scottish stores will be sourced from Scotland.”
He added that, earlier in the year, the supermarket chain had committed to sourcing more of its food from closer to home and its dedicated Scottish sourcing team was playing an important part in that process.
“We’ve been working closely with Scottish farmers and suppliers from across Scotland, so that we can offer customers the best-quality produce, including fresh Scottish chicken.”
Meanwhile Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead said it was a welcome move for the Scotland and showcased that provenance and origin of food is important. “Scottish produce is renowned locally and globally and consumers have confidence in it, so it’s important that the entire supply chain continues to build on that reputation and maximise new market opportunities,” he said.
A spokesman for 2 Sisters Food Group said: “Through closer collaboration with our farmers and Tesco, we are able to serve Scottish consumers with local Scottish-sourced chicken, bred to high welfare standards, using approved farms, which helps us to support the local supply chain.”
