Derbyshire District Council rejects pig farm plans

Objections to a proposed Midland Pig Producers’ pig farm were upheld by South Derbyshire District council in a meeting on Tuesday (25 June).

Proposals to build a pig farm in Foston have been severely contested by residents, and the council has upheld their views. The Soil Association said the council continued its “steadfast opposition” of the plans since 2009 and was the “key democratic representative of local opinion”.

Policy director at the Soil Association Peter Melchett said: “We welcome the decision from South Derbyshire District Council to oppose the proposed pig factory at Foston. But almost four years on from the original planning proposal, local residents are still living with uncertainty. The Soil Association opposed this large-scale intensive pig farm due to the human health impacts this particular farming system could have on the local community.”

He said the organisation supported human-scale farming and the solution to a pressured supply chain was not in intensive operations. “Large-scale industrial farms may be able to produce food a little more cheaply in the short term. But we will end up paying a high price for what may be marginally cheaper food.”

However, a spokesperson for Midland Pig Producers said in a statement to “We are aware that South Derbyshire District Council rejected our amended plans for a pig farm at Foston at a meeting. However, the decision whether to grant the planning application is that of Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council recommendations are only part of the process.

“We are aware that a handful of local people are opposing the plans, but the vast majority of those objecting are not local residents. As we have pointed out previously, we have never expected to have the support of those activists who do not eat meat.

“We are currently ensuring that Derbyshire County Council has all the information it needs in order to make its decision.”
