DNA expert to speak at Horsegate conference

A leading DNA analysis expert is flying in from Germany to speak at a conference examining the horsemeat scandal in Oxford on 22 October 2013.

Dr Barbara Wimmer, from Eurofins Medigenomix in Germany, will be one of the key speakers at the Horsegate conference, which has been organised by The Society of Food Hygiene and Technology (SOFHT).

The German specialist DNA analysis centre was one of the first independent laboratories to confirm the presence of horse DNA in beef samples taken from Ireland, and Dr Wimmer will discuss the role that DNA testing can play in tackling food fraud.

Other speakers at the conference, which will examine how the food industry can protect itself from fraud going forward, will include David Croft of Waitrose, Bill Wadsworth of Greggs, a Defra representative and Ian Thomas of Regulatory Law Solicitors.
