New export opportunities to Africa as population grows
Beef and lamb exports could receive new opportunities as the population of West Africa expands.
As the biggest market in the West African region, Ghana’s population is forecast to rise from 25.2m this year to 29.3m in 2020, which could mean UK meat exports could increase along with demands.
Beef and beef offal exports to Ghana were up 66% in 2012 and, as the population could grow by 16.4% by 2020, this presents a great new opportunity.
This month Eblex will lead a trip to Ghana with a delegation of exporters to establish further market opportunities and meet with government representatives in the region.
Leading the group will be Eblex export marketing executive Jonathan Eckley. He said: “Since August 2010, we have gained access to more than 60 new markets, including those in West Africa. While the volume of exports to the region isn’t huge, we are heading in the right direction and Ghana is the key gateway to potentially increasing the volume of exports to the region.
“With the projected population growth in Ghana over the next seven years, demand is likely to increase. Our mission will help lay the foundations for long-term trade relationships in the region, underpin potential price volatility and help our producers maximise returns through full carcase utilisation.”
