Butchers' Fair Autumn 2013

Featuring a mix of competitions, exhibitions, presentations and networking, there is something on offer for everyone at the Autumn Bakers’ & Butchers’ Fair.

Taking place at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate, the fair offers a platform and forum for butchers and the trade to get together, network and see some of the latest equipment, techniques and products available to the market.

Added into the mix will be a range of expert speakers, industry leading competitions, such as the National Pie Competition and MTJ’s distinguished Champion of Champions sausage contest, and it is an event not to be missed.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, which organises the fair, said: “Last year’s fair in Harrogate proved to be a great success, with butchers from all over the country visiting, taking part, and getting the benefit of an event that is geared to cater exactly for their needs.

This year will be no different and we’ve organised an exciting programme to allow butchers to make the most of their time. Events like these, dedicated and focused on the trade, are a great opportunity for butchers to not only hear and see some of the latest innovations, but also interact and meet up with like-minded peers.

“All good butchers have skills and information to share to help their trade, and the autumn fair is a great opportunity to come along and pick up some new ideas to help boost your business.”

A strong line-up of speakers will also be appearing throughout the day, and will feature three-times Champion of Champions winner Allan Bennett who will be passing on his tips on how to create the ultimate award winning sausage, from advice on filling and seasoning to cooking and presentation.

Also on stage will be Steve Derrick from Lucas Ingredients, to give a talk on how butchers can stamp their identity onto their local market. He will be talking about how to build a reputation as an artisan butcher and become a destination shop by curing your own bacon. Steve will demonstrate how easy it is to make your own bacon and cured products using Lucas cures.

Finally, Stephen Plume, teacher, foodie and radio presenter, will be giving a talk on how he became an accidental sausage expert. Stephen, who was nicknamed The Sausage King by the press because of his sausage knowledge, has an interest in food far beyond that. He’s enthusiastic about all honest, local food. He has a popular radio show called The Foodie Fix, a newspaper column and will soon shoot the pilot for his first TV series.

The National Pie Competition, held in association with Meat Trades Journal and sister-title British Baker, and sponsored by Brook Food Processing will also be a key fixture at the fair. Open to both bakers and butchers, there are four categories available: Pork Pie, Savoury Pie, Steak & Kidney and Pasties.

Bedington added: “Pies are big business for butchers, and growing all the time. We’re expecting some impressive entries into this stand-out competition, which is now entering its third year. Last year saw an incredible standard of products and we expect this year to be no different.”

Champion of Champions

Harrogate will also play host, once again, to Meat Trade Journal’s prestigious and long-running Champion of Champions sausage competition.

This event, which sees the UK’s best sausage producers gather to decide who has made the UK’s ultimate sausage, is one of the most coveted awards in the trade.

Bedington added: “This competition is one of the key events in any serious sausage-maker’s calender and continues to attract the best in the business. This year will be no different, and we’re expecting the judging to be quite intense. To win this contest allows you to say that you are the best sausage-maker in the country, and that’s a prize worth having.”

Last year saw Wolverhampton-based Allan Bennett take the title for an unprecedented third time, cementing his reputation as the UK’s leading sausage champion. Allan will also be on hand at the fair to give a presentation on how to produce award-winning sausages.
