2 Sisters to close roast chicken plant

2 Sisters Food Group is to close its Haughley Park roast chicken site in Suffolk, after failing to reach an alternative with staff in a consultation.

Staff were told about the closure yesterday (14 October), following the company’s proposed closure in August. Around 345 staff could lose their jobs, MeatInfo.co.uk was told. However, a further 150 agency staff will also feel the pinch of the news.

A 2 Sisters Food Group spokesman told MeatInfo.co.uk that it was an ageing site and a “loss-making” one. “We have also found it difficult to get adequate power to the site. We are unable to get mains gas to the site, which would be essential if we were to make the site viable,” he added.

Places for around 200 staff have been found in other parts of the business, the spokesman added, while a company statement said: “It is with regret that 2 Sisters Food Group today formally announces its intention to cease production and therefore close its roasted poultry production site at Haughley Park, Suffolk.

“Since informing our employees of this proposal in August, we have continually met with colleagues to try and find other solutions and alternatives to closure. However, after taking this time to hear and explore all viewpoints and ideas with employees and union representatives, the inescapable truth is that the site is unsustainable and unviable – environmentally, economically and commercially.”

2 Sisters said it would support staff during the difficult and uncertain time to help as much as it can. However, the site will cease production and close on Friday, 15 November.

Meanwhile, it added that the company’s commitment was firmly with operations in East Anglia, where tens of millions of pounds have been invested in the region since 2005. “Our sites at Eye, Flixton, Witham, Basildon and Thetford provide livelihoods for more than 2,500 people and their families.”

Usdaw full-time area organiser Adam Skwierawski said the news was devastating and added: "My prime focus is to secure redeployment opportunities for as many of our members as possible into suitable, alternative roles within the 2 Sisters Food Group. So far we have found approximately 200 vacancies at other sites, which Haughly Park workers can apply for, including 158 at Thetford, around 60 at Witham and more at Eye.

“I am having on-going discussions with the company, to find further opportunities for members losing their jobs because of the closure.”
