Celebrity chef reveals award winner to kick-start British Sausage Week
Celebrity chef Simon Rimmer will kick-start British Sausage Week today by announcing the winner of the Best Multiple Retailer Bangers category.
The Sausage Week ambassador will take to the stage at Smiths, in Old Spitalfields Market, London, to mark the start of the week-long celebrations, which run from 4-10 November.
As well as marking the start of Sausage Week, Rimmer will reveal the winner of the retail category as Waitrose, for its ‘Six Sweet and Succulent Pork Sausages with Caramelised Red Onion Confit’. The bangers, which were supplied by Walkers Midshires, took the Retail Gold Banger Award, for their taste, texture and appearance.
The upmarket retailer also took the Silver Award for its ‘12 Aromatic Pork and Herb Chipolatas’, which were seasoned with rosemary and thyme.
Marks & Spencer, meanwhile, bagged a Silver Award for its new range of posh hotdogs, called ‘Grill Range Posh Dogs’. Both Asda and Tesco took Bronze Awards for their entries.
Keith Fisher, Bpex butchery and product development manager, said the standard of quality pork sausages entered in the category was extremely high, adding that the judges had an “extremely tough task” on their hands.
He added: “We’re delighted to have Simon with us today to kick-start the British Sausage Week celebrations and present our worthy champions with their Banger Awards.
“He has also been sampling some of the winning sausages at our pop-up shop in Old Spitalfields Market, which is showcasing all the regional finalists’ sausages as well as those from the multiple retailers. He will then take to the road on a nationwide tour to discover even more superb sausages. The week presents an ideal platform for retailers, sausage manufacturers and butchers to showcase their quality pork sausages.”
