Carcase victory for farmers

In a victory for British farmers, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has decided to end the practice of rounding down the weight of carcases.

Red meat producers were at risk of having their animals consistently and significantly undervalued, said the National Farmers' Union of Wales (NFU Cymru), which lobbied for the change in trading conditions.

As a result of the Defra ruling, new guidance will be issued to the red meat industry and the exact scale reading will now determine price.

Ed Rees, chairman of NFU Cymru's livestock board, said: "This victory is a good step in the right direction, however NFU Cymru's livestock board will be monitoring the situation to ensure current prices are at least maintained and the future of the industry is sustainable in the light of increased costs and low profitability in the sheep sector."
