Entries flood in for National Steak Pie Competition
This year's National Steak Pie competition has once again caught the imagination of pub chefs judging by the number of entries that have already flooded into EBLEX's offices.
This year's National Steak Pie competition has once again caught the imagination of pub chefs throughout the country, judging by the number of entries that have already flooded into the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX)'s offices.
EBLEX foodservice project manger Hugh Judd, said: "The closing date for entries is not until the 27 April 2007, but with £10,000 worth of prizes up for grabs - and the kudos that goes with winning an established high profile national competition - chefs have been quick to ensure that they are in with a chance of winning by getting their entries in early this year."
The competition is open to anyone working in a pub or restaurant in England, but the pie entered must be made from scratch on the premises.
Following an initial paper judging round, semi-finalists will be selected to go through to the next stage of the competition, when a mystery diner will visit their premises unannounced to sample and score the pie on site.
Six finalists will then be selected to go through to the championship cook-off final in July 2007, when they will go head-to-head with the best in the country in the battle to win the prestigious National Steak Pie Champion title.
Judd said: "My advice to anyone who wants to enter is to think carefully about the detail you supply with your entry form, as the judges generally consider supporting material to be helpful.
"Whether it's a photograph of your dish, a letter from your supplier showing where you source your meat and other ingredients from, or endorsements from customers who think that your Steak Pie is simply the best - if it helps to make your dish stand out, then make sure you send it in! And most importantly of all - don't forget to include your fully costed recipe."
