A new beef snack has been launched with a name that pulls no punches. BullOx biltong is the latest product from The Jerky Group, which started selling beef jerky three years ago under the name Rocking JC Beef Jerky.

A new beef snack has been launched with a name that pulls no punches. BullOx biltong is the latest product from The Jerky Group, which started selling beef jerky three years ago under the name Rocking JC Beef Jerky.

A softer version of the snack, Rocking JC Beef Nuggets, was launched in late 2006. The brand is now worth £4m at retail.

BullOx has confirmed listings in Asda, Budgens, Londis, Regent Inns and Total forecourts.

Biltong originated in South Africa and is naturally air dried, unlike jerky, which has an American heritage and is a smoked product.

Both are high in protein and contain less than 6% fat, compared with 35% fat found in standard crisps, which the company believes will appeal to consumers looking for a lean, tasty snack.

James Newitt, sales director and founding partner of The Jerky Group, said: "We believe there is a greater awareness of biltong than there is of jerky here in the UK, especially with the recent influx of young South Africans and the draw South Africa now has as a travel destination.

"Our vision is to continue to lead growth of the UK's beef snack category and biltong is a logical progression for us."

BullOx biltong is made in the UK by South African manufacturers using British and Irish beef. It is available in 25g packs on a clip strip for display.
