18 poised to contest Battle of Britain

A TOTAL of 18 stores will fight it out for the title of 'Best in Britain' at the finals of the SuperMeat Awards in London on 21 June.

Stores as far apart as Perth in Scotland, Swansea in Wales and Newton Abbot in Devon are among those to have reached the final. The best stores in Scotland, Wales and four regions of England will be named with the very best of these being declared the overall winner. The best meat and fish counters will also be named.

Members of the Women's institute judged the stores under the adjudication of Meat Trades Journal advisor, Fred A'Court. Among the criteria on which the stores were judged was the quality of meat, poultry and fish being sold, the effectiveness of displays, use of marketing and promotion, the appearance, abilities and teamwork of staff, contributions made to local communities and work with suppliers. Aisles and counters were judged.

Fred A'Court said "Store groups have been much more consistent in the way individual stores are presented this year. We were impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of staff. And the quality of meat and fish counter displays continues to rise year-on-year. It promises to be a great final celebrating the best that supermarkets can offer."

As well as naming the best stores the best products across a range of categories will also be named at the final, which takes place at the Hilton hotel in Park Lane. The Red Meat Industry Forum will present its own Award for Supply Chain Excellence on the night.

In the running are: Geo Adams and Sons for significant savings to their supply chain; RWM Food Group for developing an integrated supply chain; and Turton Quality Foods for building innovative partnerships with other companies.

Four supermarket groups are participating in SuperMeat this year - Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose. Sponsors of the Journal-organised event are Bord Bia, BPEX, DBMC, EBLEX, HCC, RMIF and Vion.
