A major meat processing company has finally closed up its South Wales production site.

A major meat processing company has finally closed up its South Wales production site.

Cranberry Foods had launched a review into the future of the Abergavenny site in January following a drop in home grown turkey sales due to competition from cheap foreign imports.

A 90 day consultation period was then begun. This has now been completed and the plant has finally closed with the loss of several hundred jobs.

Production has been transferred to the company's plant in Derby where 140 jobs are being created.

Part of the Abergavenny plant will stay open as a packing and distribution centre safeguarding 120 jobs.

Local Wales AM Nick Ramsey commented: "Today's closure is a huge blow to the local community and will have a detrimental impact on Monmouthshire."
