Fifty three cows were entered for the three show classes; Best Dairy Export Cow, Best Suckler Export Cow and Best Steaker Cow. AJ & VJ Sealey, Wells, took top honours for the Best Export Dairy Cow, and N Hill, Cheddar, for the Best Export Sucker Cow. JH Vigar & Son, Trowbridge, took the first prize for the Best Steaker Cow.
Clive Mahony, Ruminant Divisional Manager for Meadow Quality, was very pleased with the show. "We wanted to have a cow show to reflect the importance of selecting cows for the most appropriate market, now they are allowed back into the food chain."
The cattle were all sold deadweight following the show, making up to 150p/kg for the very best.
Mark Jarrett, from the processing company Alec Jarrett judged the three classes and was impressed by the number of meaty cows put forward.
Meadow Quality markets over 100 cows a week. These are marketed on a deadweight basis to a range of processors across the country and producers are given detailed on-farm advice on how best to market their cows.
