This is the first time this type of publication promoting recipes in which fruit or vegetables are not the main ingrediant have been authorised to carry the logo.
The logo will be used across a number of BPEX recipe booklets to denote the pork recipes that contain at least one of the recommended daily portions (80g) of fruit or vegetables.
MLC foodservice trade manager, Tony Goodger, said: 'The MLC supports the need for consumers to eat a variety of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day as part of a healthy, balanced diet and this is reflected in our recipe development work. In addition, all of the recipes develped for foodservice on behalf of BPEX contain no additional salt or sugar and no unnecessary fat."
MLC human nutrition manager, Maureen Strong, said: "Not only id red meat one of the best sources of easily absorbed iron, it enhances the uptake of iron from other foods, such as cereals, vegetables and ulses. Many individuals consume inadequate amounts of iron, for example, 40 per cent of females and 11-34 years do not have enough iron in their diet."
Nowadays, lean pork generally contains less than 4 per cent fat, of which 50 per cent is unsaturated. in addition, pork is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals.
