Macsween takes enviro award
Leading haggis maker Macsween of Edinburgh is the proud winner of a 2008 Vision in Business for the Environment (VIBES) award, a significant environmental accolade for a Scottish based company.
Macsween won the 'Best Management' of a small business category in recognition of its commitment to proactive and innovative environmental management at its haggis factory.
Commenting on VIBES, James Macsween, director of Macsween of Edinburgh said: "I'm delighted to receive this award on behalf of our excellent team. As the world's leading haggis brand, we ensure that an effective approach to environmental and energy management is embedded within the way we do business. Consequently, we will continue to innovate and find ways of further reducing our environmental impacts."
Gillian Bruce, VIBES chair said: "The VIBES judges were instantly impressed by Macsween's efforts - its environmental policies are central to its business ethos and it has a clear vision for sustainable growth. The work done with its neighbouring community was also commended. It is great to see a business which not only manufactures high quality products but also puts management of resources and waste at the top of its agenda."
Macsween of Edinburgh has focussed its management efforts on energy efficiency and use, carbon emissions, solid waste, water use and transport. While haggis production has continued to increase in line with UK-wide, all year demand growth, the company has continued to meet carbon emission targets and has virtually eliminated waste sent to landfill.
A factory extension in 2009 will see the implementation of further energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
