Australia's prime minister John Howard has announced a £140m aid package after hearing that the country's farmers, driven to despair by the worst drought in 20 years, are committing suicide in unpredecented numbers. Every four days, saddled with dust bowl fields and a mountain of debt, one male farmer is said to take his life. The rate is double the national average.
