Tesco expands into Poland
Tesco, the UK supermarket leader, is continuing its expansion abroad by scooping up 142 convenience stores in Poland in a deal worth £72m.
Tesco also has 107 Polish hypermarkets in its overseas portfolio. The 142 Leader Price stores were bought from French firm Casino, which has pulled out of the aggressively competitive Polish grocery retailing market. Its larger stores were sold to Metro, of Germany.
On the opposite tack, Wm Morrison sold six UK supermarkets and a depot in Aylesford, Kent, to Waitrose for an estimated £80m. Morrisons is continuing to trim its stores following its purchase of Safeway. The stores are in Eastbourne, Formby, Hexham, Lymington, Poole and Southampton.
