Places are being offered as part of an EU funded project involving partners from across Europe.
The F4ST programme, which is open to anyone working in the food industry - from restaurant owners to safety inspectors - is delivered online and includes nine modules covering subjects such as an introduction to food safety, food microbiology and food preservation.
Participants on the programme will receive 100 hours of online learning over a period of ten weeks. On completion of the programme participants will receive a recognised Pan European Food Safety Specialist qualification.
Salford University developed the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) module, which introduces a systematic risk based approach to food safety. Salford is a leader in HACCP and, as well as offering short courses and postgraduate qualifications, also conducts research of international significance.
Katherine Clark is co-ordinating the pilot of F4ST at Salford. She said: "For the first time, this course offers people the chance to understand the whole concept of food safety - from the use of pesticides in farming to the legal requirements for small caterers.
"The people who enrol on the pilot course will get training from leading centres in Europe - free of charge during this pilot. This is a great opportunity for anyone working in the food industry to help deliver a higher standard of food safety to their customers."
