Zesty sausage success at Champion of Champions
Expert sausage-maker Allan Bennett was celebrating success after walking away with the top title of Champion of Champions for the second time.
According to Paddington Bear "marmalade is good to eat" and that certainly proved true for Allan, who runs Allan Bennetts Butchers in Codsall, Wolverhampton. His pork and marmalade sausage wowed judges and beat off competition from at least 20 other champion sausage-makers at MTJ's annual contest in London this week.
Champion of Champions sees award-winning sausages from across the UK go head-to-head to pick out the best banger in the UK.
Allan, who previously won the award in 2004, said he was "over the moon" with his win. "I said to my son Steven the day before, this marmalade sausage will win. I got the idea a number of years ago, while judging another competition. At first I thought, pork and marmalade? That won't work. But then I thought they're both breakfast favourites, so why not?"
Unfortunately, first attempts at the sausage did not prove successful with customers and Allan forgot about the concept. However, he decided to revisit the sausage to enter it into the Stafford Show, adding orange zest to the mix to bring out the flavour of the marmalade and, as the results show, hit gold.
And with a Champion of Champion's title under his belt, Allan does not expect to have any more problems selling his award-winning sausage.
