Investigation into Welsh abattoirs launched

The Welsh Assembly has announced that its Rural Development sub-committee is to undertake an inquiry into animal welfare and meat hygiene at abattoirs and slaughterhouses in Wales.

The aim of the committees inquiry is to assess whether the current arrangements for ensuring animal welfare and meat hygiene are effective. It will also establish what further action, if any, could be taken to ensure the proper implementation of the relevant legislation.

The committee has asked people with an interest in the subject to submit a written response by 8 January 2010. It will use the written evidence, along with oral evidence taken at a number of meetings to be held in early 2010, to scrutinise and make recommendations to the Welsh Assembly government.

The meetings will be held in public and will also be available on Senedd TV, which can be accessed from the committees website. All written evidence will also be published on the online.
