Police find £1m drug catch in Telford meat shipment
A meat wholesaler has been left in shock after a haul of illegal drugs was discovered in a delivery sent back from Spain.
A reported 405kg of cannabis, said to be worth a million pounds, was found in stock sent back to Wholesale Meat Sale, in Telford, Shropshire. The meat was being returned from a distributor on the Costa Blanca when the UK Border Agency (UKBA) and police officers swooped on the store.
Wholesale Meat Sale accountant Robert Jones said: “It came as a shock. I was away during the raid and they’ve taken files and paperwork.”
Jones added that the company has co-operated fully with the UKBA and was in the process of moving premises when the raid occurred.
A UKBA spokesman said: "The UK Border Agency carried out an operation in Telford on 13 July as part of a drug smuggling investigation. One man was arrested and bailed." The investigation is still ongoing.
