HCC looks at cattle herd health
In a bid to boost the profits of Welsh cattle farmers and increase the health of the nation’s herd, Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has developed a booklet to explore the main health issues affecting beef enterprises. It also offers advice on herd health planning.
HCC industry development manager Siôn Aron Jones said: “The health of animals within a beef herd can have a major impact on the physical performance of livestock and the finances of the farm business.
“A successful and profitable beef enterprise relies on productive and efficient cattle, and having a healthy herd is an essential component of this.”
Alongside the release of the booklet, entitled ‘Herd Health - maximising your herd’s potential through improved health’, HCC delivered an updated version of its beef producer handbook.
Jones explained the handbook offers guidelines for farmers on selecting livestock for the market by examining all aspects of the supply chain. He added: “Healthy cattle that meet the market requirements and are selected at the correct time are at the core of getting the full potential from each animal.
“These two free publications have been designed to offer the latest advice for farmers, to aid them in making the best decisions for their businesses.”
