Entries flood in for product evaluation
The British Pig Executive (BPEX) was inundated with entries into its Product Evaluation Event at the North West Regional Roadshow for butchers.
Thirty six butchers entered 233 products for the evaluation - the first of which took place this Spring (Jan/April) - held at Preston North End Football Club in Lancashire.
Cumbrian butcher, Stuart Higginson, of Higginsons Butchers, was crowned Overall Category Champion for the North West region for his Home-Cured Pancetta. Mr Higginson said: "This is a big surprise and I'm absolutely delighted for the lads back in the shop who prepare the product."
The title of Category Champion for the 'Young Sausage Maker' category, sponsored by the Meat Training Council, went to 18 year old Neil Whittaker from Burnley in Lancashire.
Mr Whittaker said: "I devised the recipe for these sausages myself and entered them last year and won a gold award but I took on board the judges' comments, went away and did more trials and have now come back to win the category. I'm really chuffed!" The next stop on the tour will be Newmarket, East Midlands on February 15. For more details visit www.porkforbutchers.co.uk.
