Meat stats launched by Eblex and Bpex

An online library of meat industry facts and figures has been launched by Eblex and Bpex, available free to levy payers and industry stakeholders.

The online system is an updated version of Meatfax, which was a series of fact sheets offered by the Meat & Livestock Commission that were faxed out to subscribers.

The data covers information concerning abattoirs, global trade, national balance sheets, livestock numbers, trade and seasonality of markets.

Stephen Howarth, from AHDB Market Intelligence, said: “The Meatfax sheets were widely used in the past as a reference resource for the meat industry, both here and elsewhere in the world. However, demand fell as fax machines were superseded by email and, as resourcing changed, the service was put on hold.

“We did still periodically get requests for the data and we found them useful as reference documents, so we have spent the last few months bringing them up to date. We can now offer them free online rather than through a subscription-only service.

“They will be updated as appropriate, so the time series, which goes back to 1990 in some instances, will be maintained. We hope they become the go-to place for industry facts and figures and complement the other resources we already have online via the Eblex and Bpex websites.”
