East Midlands winners awarded for pork product excellence
The East Midlands Roadshow produced some worthy winners in the Pork Product Excellence Awards last week.
Lakings of Louth from Lincolnshire won the Speciality Cold Eating Pork Pie category, going on to claim the Overall Champion title with its Harvest Pie, which combines sausage meat with apple, pickle and onion.
The Harvest Pie will now go forward to the National Final taking place at Butchers’ Hall, London, in June.
Chris Smith of Lakings of Louth said: “We are thrilled to be crowned Overall Champion at this year’s awards. We have won category awards in the past, but this is outstanding.
“We developed the Harvest Pie especially for the competition by taking an existing Lincolnshire sausage pie recipe and adding to it.”
Marks Family Butchers in Ashbourne also had plenty to celebrate after its Dry Cured Middle Bacon won the Home Cured Bacon or Gammon category and its black pudding won the Black Pudding category.
Claire Holland, Bpex product marketing manager, said: “We were delighted to see such a great turn-out from butchers in the region – 341 entries from 51 butchers is a great result for the East Midlands roadshow.”
The last roadshow, in the 2013-2014 season, takes place at the South of England Showground, Haywards Heath on Wednesday 26 March.
