Job losses at Asda head office
A number of job losses are expected at Asda’s head offices following a structural review at the retailer.
Asda confirmed it had been in discussions with its head office collegues, but it declined to give an official number of job losses, despite media reports today that they will be in their hundreds.
A spokesperson for Asda said: "Over 18 months ago, we reviewed our business after recognising a structural change taking place in the retail market. This led us to set a new strategy in 2013, which will see Asda redefine value retailing in the UK.
"Consequently, we have been talking to our colleagues for some time about the need for change. In the spirit of openness, we’ve let our colleagues know that we will be having some more detailed discussions with them this week about a new structure. As you’d expect, we’ll have conversations about the details with all our colleagues first."
The news comes the week after Asda reported declining like-for-like sales in its fourth quarter – down 0.1%. However, like-for-like sales for the full year were up 0.5% for the 52 weeks to 3 January 2014.
