British Pie Awards announce head judge

The British Pie Awards 2014 have appointed Ian Nelson, technical account manager at Hovis, as the head judge.

The awards, run by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association since 2009, will be held at St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray, on 30 April 2014. Pies will be judged over 19 categories by pie experts, celebrity chefs and acclaimed food writers.

With 30 years’ experience in the baking industry, Nelson has been a “huge fan” of the awards since they were launched a few years ago. “I believe they celebrate a part of the baking industry that is often overlooked, even though pies are a significant part of our British food heritage.

“With around 1,000 pies to be tasted and judged in one day, I am  certainly going to have my work cut out. However, I would like to reassure all entrants that my emphasis will be on ensuring quality and consistent marking and tasting takes place across the judging process. It will be a great day and I am looking forward to it immensely.”

This year the awards will be commemorating soldiers from World War One, with a special category named, ‘A pie fit for a hero’.

“Since it is the 100th commemorative year of WW1, we felt it an appropriate touch to introduce a category that could acknowledge the caterers who support our armed forces and associated personnel. We are hoping the category attracts some new entrants and really provide us with an insight into their skills as well as some food for thought,” explained Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association.

Entry deadline for this year’s awards is 11 April 2014.
