Meat wholesaler set to hit £3m in first year
Meat wholesaler Grassroots Wholesale Food is reported to be on schedule for a turnover of over £3m in their first year.
Grassroots, based in Altham, East Lancashire, is co-owned by brothers Simon and Nick Mellin, who are both majority shareholders in the sustainable food shop Roaming Roosters. “When Roaming Roosters opened its farm shop, bistro and education centre, we found we were constantly being approached by people wanting to resell our products,” explained Simon.
“We recognised there was huge potential for our sustainably farmed products and, after testing the market, decided to set up Grass Roots. In doing so, we were enabling Roaming Roosters to shine as a retail business and Grass Roots as a wholesaler,” he added.
The brothers, aged 25 and 27, reported that resale, as well as online retailers and shopping channels, were all growth markets for the company.
The five-person team has now grown to 40, almost outgrowing its 8,000sq ft warehouse in Altham. Simon added: “The business is just five months in, yet we have so many exciting opportunities presenting themselves to us. Key to our growth at this stage is the recruitment of well-skilled butchers and cutters and we are about to embark on a huge recruitment exercise in order to get this team in place.”
