Apple pie fought off savoury opposition to win pie title
A Bramley apple pie, produced by Morecambe Football Club, has been crowned Supreme Champion at the British Pie Awards 2014.
The results, announced at a special awards lunch yesterday (1 May), followed the previous day’s judging at St Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray, where 825 entries were tested and scored across 19 different categories.
Morecambe FC was also named the Football Pie Class Champion for its Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie.
Walker & Son took all three top spots in the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie class, with The Outdoor Pig Company named winner in the Bpex-sponsored Pork Pie category, for its Family Pork Pie.
Boghall Butchers took the top spot in the Steak and Kidney, Vegetarian Pie, and Pie Fit For A Hero categories, while The Pie Kitchen was triumphant in the Beef & Any flavour combination category for its Steak, Binham Blue & Portobellini Pie.
In the Lamb class, sponsored by Quality Meat Scotland, the Great North Pie Company won with its Lamb, Ale & Mint Pie.
Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, said: “The competition was tougher than ever this year which makes Morecambe FC’s achievement all the more impressive. It was fantastic to bring together so many people and producers with a passion for pies, quality ingredients and great British food.”
