Price most important factor for meat buying public
Price is the most important consideration when buying meat for consumers, according to research comissioned by the British Poultry Council (BPC).
The survey found that 61% of 2,067 people said price was the most important factor when choosing what meat to buy and eat. Appearance was the second most important consideration for a third of consumers (33%), followed closely by taste (31%). Consumers in the South West and aged 18-24 (both 70%) are the most price conscious, whereas those aged 65 and over are the least likely to prioritise cost (only 45%).
The BPC also reported that buying British was important for consumers with 60% saying they buy British (28% ‘always’ and 32% ‘mostly’). The report also analysed regional differences and found that 29% of Scots said they ‘always’ bought British meat compared with 14% of those in Yorkshire and Humber.
The study, conducted by Populus, a member of the BPC, also gauged people’s ‘engagement’ with poultry after the horsemeat scandal and found one in five respondents (19%) said they now eat more poultry than beef, pork or other meat.
Andrew Large, chief executive of the BPC, commented on the results: “The UK poultry industry continues to feed the nation. British provenance remains important for the majority of consumers and so we will strive to provide them with high quality, healthy and affordable products.”
